A MidSummer Nights Run – Beaches – 30k

A midsummer nights run in the beaches (just east of downtown toronto) was a wonderful event with highly spirited runners. This 30k race runs along the waterfront to the lesley spit area, and then to the beaches.  It reminds me of the distillery run, but with the inclusion of the beaches, is more scenic. Apparently, it is a themed run as some fellow runners dressed up (I don’t understand how you can run 30k with a costume – but people did it!). Unlike most races, this race starts in the early evening and runs until darkness – which is a necessity given that it is annually held in the middle of August when temperatures can be hot. Luckily, it was an overcast day and light rain did prevail. If anything, that helped to keep me cool! I really enjoyed this race as it was very accessible and conveniently located (close to DVP, lakeshore), a smaller race (fewer athletes on the course is always nicer – I didn’t feel like I was crowded or swarmed by runners at the beginning), and well-organized with aid stations (the volunteers had bright coloured shirts and were spread out by only a few km’s – everytime I saw a bright shirt in the distance, it motivated me to keep running). This was the first running race I have completed that was longer than the half-marathon distance. I went into the race without an expectations or specific goals other than wanting to complete it. I actually took 15s breaks at each aid station which really helped me in taking in the necessary fuel given the hot day and length of the race. It was also a motivating strategy as I always knew that in 3-4k I would have that 15s break to refuel and prepare for the next bout. Both my older brother and I ran this race, him being significantly faster than myself, but we both loved the venue and are looking forward to competing next year. I would highly recommend this event for the reasons mentioned above and also because of its timing. There are very few longer distance running races during the summer time, but this race gave me a great idea of where my running fitness was at mid-season, and would be great preparation for anyone planning to do a fall marathon.
