I had the pleasure of taking part in the 5th Annual Chase the Coyote trail race in beautiful Mono Cliffs Provincial Park. The race, which incorporates scenic double and single track trails, including a portion of the Bruce Trail, offers three distances (21.4km, 14.4km and 5.7km) of varying difficulty. I ran the 14.4km challenge course, which saw runners climb up the Niagara Escarpment twice, and which also had runners dancing over rocks and roots in spots. The 5.7km route is perfect for the beginning trail runner, with gentler hills and less technical running sections. With the late September race date, the fall colours are just beginning in this part of Ontario, and there are some majestic views from the top of the Escarpment to take in. The race organization is fantastic, with many helpful volunteers at the Start/Finish line, and directing the runners along the well-marked route. Chase the Coyote offers runners some interesting swag: this year runners were treated to an awesome race trucker hat, as well as a 5th Anniversary t-shirt. After the race, runners could share stories of the trail over a delicious BBQ that was included in the race entry. Awards are offered for the top 3 runners in each gender, as well as top 3 in the age groups, in all races, but all runners come away as winners with this race. Runners even get amazing professional pictures taken of them at more than one spot on the course, capturing forever these cherished moments on the trails. Overall you can tell a lot of love and attention to detail are put into the race! In its 5 years Chase the Coyote has become a fall trail classic, selling out weeks before race date.
