GU Products Review

I have been consistently using GU products since I’ve started running about two years ago and signing up for the Toronto Waterfront Half Marathon. As there are water stations also giving out the GU gel, it becomes an easy choice for me to choose GU for my primary choice of fuel. Having the opportunity to grab some extra GU gels on the course allows us to carry fewer gels and gives us the opportunity to grab some in case you have accidentally dropped a gel. Undoubtedly, it is essential to become familiar with the race day gears and nutrient options. For long training runs, I would use GU Energy Gel to fuel. Meanwhile, for race day, I would choose Roctane, which comes with extra Branched Amino Acids (BCAAs) compared to regular GU Energy Gels, which delay fatigue and give you some extra boost on race day.

GU gel definitely has one of the most options in terms of flavours and caffeine amount. It offers some unique flavours that no other brands offer, like Cola Me Happy and Campfire S’mores. This wide range of flavour selection could give you some spark mid-run, looking forward to taking another gel, as they offer delicious flavours based on your preference. I always alternate between high-caffeine and no-caffeine gel to avoid upsetting the stomach. GU also has a richer flavour profile compared to many other brands. Chocolate Outrage and Espresso Love are my favourite flavours, while there are also flavours like Lemon Sublime and Salted Lime, which have a distinct saltier flavour compared to regular gels. Having the opportunity to choose from a wide range of flavours allows us not to get tired of the same or similar flavours. In addition, it only takes a couple of minutes for the sugar and caffeine to kick in, as the body quickly processes carbohydrates, directing them into the bloodstream.

I’ve also been using GU Roctane Electrolyte Capsules for indoor bike training, especially in longer or harder efforts, as you’ll be sweating a lot more compared to when the wind can cool you down during an outdoor ride. It’s a small transparent plastic capsule carrying electrolyte powder inside. It will not give any bitterness and is easy to swallow. Especially in hot, humid conditions or on race day, you’ll be sweating and end up losing a lot of sodium, chloride, and magnesium. It’s recommended to take 1–2 capsules per hour of activity; this greatly reduces the risk of dehydration, muscle cramps, and fatigue. Instead of GU electrolyte capsules, GU Hydration Drink Tabs is also a similar and effective way to replenish electrolytes and stay hydrated. The flavours are on the mild side or at the sweet spot of the intensity of flavour, so you don’t need to wash them down with water. I mainly consume the GU…

For longer distances, or for people with a sensitive stomach, GU Energy Chews and Stroopwafel are my go-to fuel. Solid food offers a real food feeling and will not upset the stomach. These GU products are formulated specifically for endurance sports, delivering a balanced mix of carbohydrates, electrolytes, and amino acids, whereas regular candies simply provide a quick sugar boost with fewer functional benefits.

Overall, the GU product line has a comprehensive range of sports nutrition solutions, including GU Hydration Drink Tabs, Roctane Drink Mix, Gels, Energy Chews, and Electrolyte Capsules. These options give athletes the ability to choose what works best for them based on their intensity and personal performance needs.
