Finding the right fuel can be harder than finding the right shoe, especially when you need something that gives you sustained energy without upsetting your stomach. I’d been experimenting with different gels and chews for ages, but when I found the Brix Energy Chews at the Ottawa Marathon Race Weekend back in May, I fell in love. I used them while I was volunteering with the Xtra Mile Crew, which required me to be out on the course for hours — and they have since become my favorite fuel for anything over 90 minutes.
I love that the Chews have a natural source of carbohydrates (maple syrup), and that they also include electrolytes and zinc, which helps with muscular recovery. It’s clean fuel that sits easy, and the texture is perfect: soft, easy to chew, and not sticky on the teeth, which is a big win when you’re breathing hard and trying to keep your pace. Each pouch has two servings, which deliver a solid 49g of carbs and 200mg of sodium.
I’ve tried the three varieties—Maple, Maple & Blueberry, and Maple & Raspberry—and honestly, they’re all solid, but the Pure Maple flavor is my absolute favorite. It feels like a bit of a treat on the run, especially when I’m craving something comforting near the end of a long training session. The fruit flavors are great for variety, but the plain Maple is awesome without being overly sweet. You can find them on the Running Free site here: Brix Chews Single Maple – Running Free Canada
While I focused on the Chews, it’s worth noting that Brix offers a full range of maple-based products for endurance, including their popular Maple Syrup Energy Gels and Waffles, giving you flexibility in how you fuel.
If you’re looking for a performance chew that ditches hard-to-pronounce ingredients, Brix Energy Chews are definitely worth adding to your training toolkit!
