Wasaga Beach Triathlon – September 2010

The Wasaga Beach Triathlon takes place right at Beach 1 in the city of Wasaga Beach. The atmosphere is wonderful and spectator-friendly with crowds of people cheering you on. This is my first time doing this race. I was somewhat apprehensive as fellow team running free member, Arthur Kwok, complained of the large waves and cold water that seem to appear on an annual basis. To my surprise, Georgian Bay was calm (still cold, so a wetsuit is a must). This is the one time I didn’t do a huge swim warm-up as I didn’t want to be COLD starting off the race. The wave starts were excellent in spreading out the field of athletes. While there was a slight current, the swim went well without any issues. The run into transition is somewhat long, however, a majority of it is on natural sand which makes it easy on the feet. The transition area is absolutely huge which enabled me to have alot of personal. space to rack my bike and lay out my gear. While the bike course was “scenic”, but was somewhat disppapointing with really rough patches on some of the country farm roads. As can be expected, the roads were largely open to traffic, which in some places was dangerous given the hills and hidden road entrances. Retrospectively, I went too hard out on the bike, and didn’t save enough for the run (that seems to be a weakness of mine during the 2010 season). The run course comprised of loops right adjacent to the beach – likely between beach 1 and 2. The run course was mostly flat, but on a variety of terrain – pavement, dirt, boardwalk. There were plenty of well-organized aid stations which became a necessity due to the seasonably warm temperatures. I am likely to do this race again given the friendly race environment – however, in future, I would train more (don’t we all say that!) and leave more for the run!  All in all a great race with a great race atmosphere!
