Nathan Handheld Bottle Review – ExoDraw 2 Insulate

In this post, I’ll review the Nathan ExoDraw 2 Insulated 18oz soft flask handheld bottle. I received this product as a prize from Team Running Free, but this review is based solely on my own experience after two months of use.

Context – My Hydration Routine

When it comes to hydration, runners have several options: running belts, hydration vests, handheld bottles, or relying on water fountains along the course. My choice depends on the training distance. For runs under 90 minutes, I typically go without water, unless it’s very hot. For runs longer than 150 minutes (2.5 hours), I opt for a running vest. This leaves a sweet spot in between for the Nathan handheld bottle.

I used this bottle on most of my long runs while training for a half-marathon in early September, primarily throughout the summer.

What I Like

  • Ergo-designed handstrap: This is my favorite feature. Compared to other products, I love this design because it stays in my hand with minimal effort. Once I’ve slid my hand into the triangle strap, I don’t have to worry about holding it. There’s also a bottle cover to prevent direct contact when my hand gets sweaty during the run.
  • High storage capacity: The 18oz capacity is perfect for my training needs, keeping me hydrated for about 2 hours. Anything larger would be too cumbersome to carry.
  • Lightweight: At 2.14oz (60g), it sits comfortably in my hand—sometimes I almost forget I’m carrying it.
  • Insulation: A nice bonus for carrying cold drinks during summer training. However, it can’t keep liquids cold for more than an hour. When I put ice inside, it melted completely by the end of my 2-hour run.

What Can Be Improved

  • Bottle cover design: While I appreciate the bottle cover with its pocket for gels or keys, I find it cumbersome to remove or replace. I have to remove the strap first and then take off the cover. It’s not a major issue unless I’m in a hurry.
  • Price: Compared to other Nathan handheld bottles, this product is at a higher price point, which could be a significant factor for many people considering a purchase.

Final Thoughts

The Nathan ExoDraw 2 Insulated 18oz soft flask is an excellent choice for runners seeking a lightweight, insulated bottle with an ergonomic design. It has been a reliable companion during my challenging long runs, and I anticipate using it frequently in the future.

Its standout feature is undoubtedly the ergonomic handstrap, which sets it apart from competitors. The comfortable grip it provides allows for a more relaxed and natural running form, even on longer distances. The insulation, while not perfect, is a valuable addition for summer training sessions.

The bottle’s capacity hits the sweet spot for medium to long runs, providing adequate hydration without becoming burdensome. Its lightweight nature further enhances its appeal, making it barely noticeable during runs.

However, the cover design could use some refinement to make it easier to access the contents quickly during a run. Additionally, the higher price point might give some runners pause, especially those new to using handheld bottles.

Despite these minor drawbacks, the Nathan ExoDraw 2 has proven its worth during my training. It’s a reliable, well-designed piece of equipment that has enhanced my running experience. For runners who prioritize comfort and functionality in their hydration gear, this bottle is certainly worth considering.

In conclusion, while it may not be perfect, the Nathan ExoDraw 2 Insulated 18oz soft flask handheld bottle has earned its place in my running kit. Its benefits far outweigh its shortcomings, making it a solid investment for serious runners looking to optimize their hydration strategy.
