Sable Water Optics – 101 Gear Review

I didn’t think that it was possible but Sable Water Optics has definately changed the dynamics of swim goggles and forever changed the competitive landscape amongst the manufacturers in Canada.

Let me explain why.  First, my background.  I swam competitively for 15 years followed by another 15 years recreationally.  I have worn pretty much every single goggle ever produced in the last 25 years.  I have enjoyed the good, the bad and the down right ugly over the years

My first impression was that Sable would be just another goggle in the closet of goggles and their hype was all about nothing.  Even the first time I wore them, I was pleasantly surprised but not convinced.  It wasn’t until I wore them about 5-10 times that I really started to love them.  The deal was sealed for me when I forgot them one morning and had to revert back to an old pair.  I felt like I was wearing scuba diving goggles in a deep dark cavern.

So what makes Sable Water Optics so different.  Here’s what I came up with to explain the differences:

1. Visibility.  By far the best for visibility in the industry.  You get a crisp clear picture with them on.

2. Nose bridge.  I loved the fact that the nose bridge is interchangeable.  I went for the largest nose bridge and I love it.

3. Water seal.  Once you put on the goggles, you are good to go for a long long time.   In my old pair, I would go maybe 5-10 minutes max before I had to stop and drain my goggles.  I now go 30-45 minutes without stopping and normally I have to reset them because I stop to take a break.

4. Fit.  In the past, I got to choose between water seal and fit.  If I wanted to maintain a good seal, I had to increase the tension on the rubber band at the back of the head.  The tight fit would kill my eye sockets after 20 minutes but heck I was able to get a good water seal.  With Sable, you don’t have to choose.  You get a great fit (without the extreme tension) and you get a good seal.  Now that’s original!

The only caution that I would make about Sable Water Optics is that you need to follow the instructions on how to maintain them such as cleaning and drying techniques.  Following their instructions will lead to a long and happy life with your new best friend.

If you don’t have a pair of Sable Water Optics then I recommend that you drop by your neighbourhood Running Free Store and pick up a pair.  Once you try them a couple of times, you will never go back.

Enjoy the pool!
