Backs in Motion 5K Race Report

With this being my first year as a part of Team Running Free, I was ecstatic when I was informed that I had won a free race entry to the CMCC’s Backs in Motion race through the team lottery. I chose to register for the 5K, as this is my favourite event, being a race that demands speed but some endurance as well.

This race took place in the East Don Parklands, on the wonderful, sunny Sunday morning of May 5th. I had no problem driving to the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College building and receiving my race shirt, bib, timing ankle strap, and race kit. It included several coupons and a large cooling recovery pack. I made my way to the race start by 9am since the 5K runners took off at 9:15am. I had plenty of time to warm up and prepare myself mentally for the race.

The course itself was very scenic and nice. I enjoyed running this race as it was organized well and the environment was upbeat and motivated to support a great cause. The race course was alongside the river the whole time, and there were plenty volunteers cheering you on in several points during the race. There were some small hills and elevation changes, but nothing too difficult. I experienced some moderate cramps in the beginning of the race, likely due to the fact that I hadn’t eaten my usual banana in my oatmeal that morning. I was also overdressed, a problem I haven’t faced before. I was extremely hot and tired by the third kilometre and wished I didn’t choose to wear a long sleeve compression top under my singlet. However, the race went by smoothly and I enjoyed the fresh air and beautiful paths through the park.

I was surprised to find that I had placed 1st in my age category (F15-19). I wasn’t going into the race hoping for a PR, as my training has been inconsistent and rocky with the weather and recent injuries, and was happy with my result. I watched the awards ceremony as I enjoyed the food the volunteers had handed out, which included bananas, apples, yogurt, and bagels. I received a medal and a $150 gift certificate for running shoes at The Orthotic Group. I was ecstatic about the great experience and chance to get some new running shoes for the spring!

All in all, I feel so lucky to have participated in the Backs In Motion 5K thanks to the Team Running Free lottery and am interested in running in the 37th annual race next year!
