Chemong Lake Triathlon

Date:  Sunday, July 26/09

Location: Rotary Park, Ennismore, On

Olympic Distance: Swim 1.5k, Bike 40k, Run 10k

This is a very small race that is put on by the Rotary Club of Bridgenorth, Lakefield, & Ennismore.  My friends have a cottage nearby at Sandy Lake, so we thought that this race would make a nice training day for us.  There were 6 of us from the Markham Masters Swim Club doing the race & 5 of us are training for Ironman Florida in November.  With the race being so small, 37 participants, I was a little worried about being the last one on the bike course!

 Swim 1.5k

I have no idea what I was doing on this swim!  I normally have a pretty good swim, but my sighting was way off in this race.  It should have been simple enough.  We were told to swim straight out  for about 250m to the left of a small buoy, then angle to the right, towards another buoy.  Go around that buoy & go left along the top of the triangle to the next buoy.  Make another turn here & head back to the buoy 250m off shore & then head straight back in.  I started out well & made the turns at the first 2 buoys.  At the 3rd buoy, where I was to head back towards shore, I decided that I would swim back where I had just come from.  They finally stopped me & told me that I was going in the wrong direction.  When I finally realized where I was I high tailed it toward shore.  I was not happy with myself with it being such a small field.  I passed some of my Markham Masters buddies on the way into shore.

Swim time: 30:19  (2:02/100)  17/37 overall

Bike 40k

I knew what to expect on this bike course, since I had ridden most of it riding to my friends cottage at Buckhorn.  Nothing too steep, just some long inclines, & fairly decent road.  The only confusing thing was that they already had the turnaround signs up for the sprint tri & the tri a tri.  I was passed by several men, & just kept hoping that I would not be the last one out here.  The ride was decent enough for me although I had it measured at just over 41k.

Bike time: 1:23:37  28.7kph  27/37 overall

Run 10k

When you ran out of transition, you immediately started up a long climb.  You hung a left at the top of the hill, went down a small incline, only to climb another hill.  Just after the downhill, the only other lady in my age group went flying by me.  It was a hot day, & the gatorade that I had been drinking was not agreeing with me.  I had been training with gatorade since this is what would be on the race course in Florida, but I just wanted to throw it up.  I was still thinking about the bad swim, & mentally I was done.  I did a lot of walking, & had decided that I would finish 2nd in my age group, no matter how fast I ran.  So, I took it easy for the rest of the run.

Run time: 1:03:43  6:23/k  33/37 overall

Overall:  2:57:39  2/2 age group   29/37 overall

This is a nice race if you like really small races.  I think almost everyone in the race ends up getting a nice medal in a box for their age group.
