A Year of Running with Nathan

Throughout my year of running in 2011, I had the assistance of two great hydration and energy products from Nathan.

Running outdoors in Ontario’s variable climate requires an awareness of fluid and nutrition needs. Experienced runners know that hydration and nutrition are keys to good training runs. That usually means taking in fluid, electrolytes and calories before and during your run.  In hot weather, fluid intake becomes more essential. There are many different theories about what is required, and personal needs vary. In my case, I like to carry some fluid and one or more Gu gels on any runs over an hour. In hotter weather, I carry something on every run. Having fluid and energy at hand fuels hard efforts and may save a workout being spoiled by the dreaded bonk.

For almost all of my running in 2011, the Nathan Trail Mix Energy Belt with two 300 ml (10 oz) flasks served me very well indeed.

This “energy belt” features great design. The adjustable belt is secured in front with a strong plastic snap which holds the whole thing snug on the hips. The Nathan Trail Mix is accurately billed as providing a bounce-free ride. Nothing that I did produced any chafing at contact points, even in the hottest weather. The combination of adjustable belt and firm snap closure mechanism are the keys to a firm ride.

Between the two flasks is a functional two-part pocket, with enough space for a few Gu gels and keys. I’ve easily fit a Blackberry, keys and some of the contents of my wallet into the Trail Mix for a commuter run from work to home.

In the hottest parts of the steamy Toronto summer of 2011, I carried an additional bottle using the QuickDraw Plus.

This handheld unit straps the bottle to your hand, and provides a small pocket for a gel or key. When strapped over the knuckles, no effort is required to hold onto the bottle, even when fully loaded. These are two great hydration and energy options from Nathan. Never be without your fuel.
