Montrail Mountain Masochist™ OutDry

sam_1057.JPG

I was looking for a pair of trail running shoes I can use during rain and possibly in the winter months while roads are covered with slush.  I chose the Montrail  Masochist which features their Out Dry technology.

Fit – These shoes have a small fit, I usually wear 8.5US, on the Montrail I had to go with 9.5US.

Style – The OD version came in only one color scheme of  Black/Blue/Grey, with reflective strips in front and back of the shoes.

Weight –  Size 9.5 weighted about 380g.

A really neat feature is that part of the tongue is gusseted, ie it is attached to the side of the throat right under the eyelets.  I assume this helps prevent the tongue from shifting as well as helps to keep debris out.  It  also has a removable insole.  The outsole features Montrail’s own Gryptonite technology with some pretty deep lugs.  They do a good job not attaching mud and dirt.

The top of the shoes has nice bumper for the toes, meshed sides (which I assume to be water proof) and good amount of padding for the heel.

I have used them most recently at the Chase The Coyote Trail Race, they performed well, even though I did not need the OD feature on that particular day.  The shoes gave confident, and there was no slippage.

There was a slight discomfort after the race on the part of the foot right under where the Garmin Foot Pod was attached.  Might have something to do with the way the shoes were laced.

Overall, I am happy with these shoes, and I am waiting for a chance to test them out during the winter months against the slush on the ground.
