Chemong Lake 2013: Let’s Give it a Tri

Chemong Lake Triathlon: Sprint Distance

August 11th 2013

It’s amazing what can happen over a dinner with friends. My wife (fellow RF athlete Meagan Olson) and I were having dinner with Triathlon friends in Peterborough this summer when they told us about a local race that was happening the upcoming weekend in Chemong Lake (we had dinner Friday…the race was Sunday). Before we knew what was happening we were both registered for the race and were scrambling to secure a sitter for our boys so we could race. Oh and one minor detail…this would be my first kick at the Tri can…..EVER!

So race day was fantastic. The weather was perfect, the venue, Ennismore Waterfront Park, was outstanding and the race staff and volunteers were amazing. In addition, with it being a small, local race the athletes were really focused on the event and the building of the sport rather that themselves (if you have been to a Tri….you know what I mean here).

And now the big reveal…how did it go. In a word….GREAT. Loved every single second of it. Was almost dead last out of the water (didn’t care), had a great bike along a fantastic route and had the 5th fastest run of the day. Felt great the entire time and even won a medal for finishing in the top 3 of my age category (and yes…the overall winners were not included in the age category finish).  In addition, Meg also won a medal for her race and we were able to race with friends and enjoy the day all together.

Highly recommend this race, especially if you are new to the sport and are intimidated by the atmosphere created by a bigger race (do you really need to wear your aero-helmet when you hit the porta-potty?). Will be back next year for sure!
